The Relationship of Ageism, Leisure-time Utilization, and Feelings of Loneliness among Older Adults Living in Metropolitan Areas
Kim Su-Jee

Abstract
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of ageism at the institutional and individual levels on the leisure-time utilization (social contact, sedentary leisure activity, active leisure activity) and the feelings of loneliness. Using the 2019 survey data collected by the Aged Society and Social Capital Research Center, we analyzed 500 older adults living in Seoul and other metropolitan cities. Analyses of structural equation modeling showed that the higher the participants perceived institutional-level ageism, the less time was used for social contact, and the more time was used for sedentary leisure activities. Older adults with more personal experiences of ageism tended to spend less time having active leisure activities. Also, older adults who spent more time having sedentary leisure activities were more likely to report higher levels of loneliness, and those spending more time on active leisure activities showed lower levels of loneliness. Such findings suggest that ageism plays an important role in adoption of leisure activities in older adults, which in turn influences their psychological health.
